Client: Academic Institution
Industry: Post-Secondary Education
Size: Large Public Institution
The Opportunity
Our client had developed a broad mandate over time, striving to be everything to everyone. Leadership recognized that in order to navigate rapid change and ensure the institution stood out in the post-secondary world, the team would have to take a different approach.
Another static five-year strategic plan would not provide the clarity or agility the institution needed. Our client instead wanted an approach that could withstand uncertainty, help leaders make difficult decisions, and focus investment where it would have the greatest impact.
We partnered with the institution through a 12-month organization-wide transformation to redefine its strategic direction, strengthen organizational alignment, and create a practical framework for leading through ongoing change.
Key Challenges
- How do we create strategic clarity in an increasingly unpredictable environment?
- How do we move from trying to be everything to everyone toward a more defined identity?
- How do we make difficult investment decisions with confidence?
- How do we create alignment across faculties and departments while maintaining flexibility?
- How do we build a strategy that evolves as conditions change rather than one that quickly becomes outdated?
- How do we equip managers to apply strategy to everyday decisions?
Our Approach
We began by seeking to understand the institution’s strengths, aspirations, and challenges, along with the realities leaders face at every level. Working with that information, we partnered with the executive team to build a strategy framework designed to evolve alongside the institution.
Over the course of the engagement, we:
- Engaged the full organization to shape a shared understanding of the institution’s future.
- Clarified the institution’s identity, strategic positioning, and areas of greatest opportunity.
- Developed an adaptive Strategy Wheel to guide strategic priorities and decision-making.
- Designed a practical manager toolkit that connected institutional strategy to day-to-day leadership.
- Established a common language and decision framework to support consistent leadership across the institution.
- Supported leaders in making difficult choices about priorities, investments, and emerging opportunities.
- Built governance and planning processes that encouraged continuous learning and strategic adaptability rather than fixed long-term planning.
Business Outcomes
As a result of our partnership, the institution:
- Shifted from a traditional five-year planning model to an adaptive strategic approach.
- Established greater clarity around its identity, purpose, and strategic direction.
- Created stronger organizational alignment across faculties and administrative functions.
- Equipped managers with practical tools to translate strategy into operational decisions.
- Increased confidence in making difficult resource allocation and investment decisions.
- Built a strategic framework that can adapt to changing economic, political, and educational realities.
- Created a stronger foundation for innovation by balancing long-term direction with flexibility to respond to emerging opportunities.
